What it is

Form 1099-K reports the gross payments you received through payment apps and marketplaces (PayPal, Venmo, Etsy, Uber, etc.). It's an information return โ€” not a tax bill โ€” and it can include non-taxable personal transactions. You report the business portion as income (usually on Schedule C) and exclude personal reimbursements. The reporting threshold has changed under recent law, so more people are receiving them.

Who files 1099-K

  • Sellers and gig workers paid through platforms like Etsy, eBay, Uber, or DoorDash.
  • Anyone who received business payments via PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, or similar.
  • People who received a 1099-K that mixes business and personal transactions.

What a 1099-K does โ€” and doesn't โ€” mean

A 1099-K shows the gross amount processed for you, not your taxable profit. It doesn't subtract fees, refunds, or your costs, and it can wrongly sweep in personal transactions โ€” splitting a dinner bill, reimbursing a friend, or selling used personal items at a loss. Those aren't taxable.

Report your actual business income on Schedule C (with expenses), and keep records showing which amounts on the 1099-K were personal or non-taxable. Selling personal items at a loss isn't income; selling them at a gain can be a capital gain.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 1099-K mean I owe taxes?

Not by itself. It reports gross payments received, which can include non-taxable personal transfers and doesn't subtract your costs. You owe tax only on your actual net business profit, reported on Schedule C.

What's the 1099-K threshold?

The reporting threshold has been changing under recent law, lowering over time, so more people now receive 1099-Ks even for modest platform activity. Check the current-year threshold with the IRS.

What if my 1099-K includes personal payments?

Personal reimbursements (splitting bills, repaying friends) aren't taxable. Keep records separating them from business income, and report only the business portion. Selling personal items at a loss also isn't taxable income.
